DEVOTIONAL

I used to think happiness had a formula.

Do the thing. Work the late nights. Hit the target.
Have the result. The promotion. The title. The salary with another zero on it.
Be happy. Finally. At last. Arrived.

In my 20s, I chased that formula harder than almost anything else in my life.
At 28, I won three awards in one year at my corporate job.
I stood there holding the kind of proof most people spend a career trying to get.

And for about a week, I felt it. The thing I'd been chasing…

Then it faded.

And underneath the fading was a question I didn't want to ask myself: if this isn't enough, what will be?

I just set a new target. A bigger one. I thought the formula hadn't worked yet because I hadn't done enough, or had enough.
So I did more. Had more. And waited, again, for the "be" to finally show up and stay.

It never did. Because the formula was backwards the whole time.

The Formula I Had Wrong

Here's what nobody told me: Do-Have-Be is a treadmill. You never actually arrive, because the "being" was never attached to the "having" in the first place. It was always somewhere else.

When I gave my life to Jesus, I met someone who didn't operate on that formula at all.

Jesus didn't have peace. He is peace.

He didn't have joy. He is joy.

He wasn't doing His way toward an identity. He already was the identity I had spent years chasing through awards, promotions, and approval.

That changes everything about how I wait, how I pray, and how I build a life. Because if peace and joy are who He is, they're not a prize you earn by doing enough. They're something you receive by being in Him first.

He Doesn't Give What He Has. He Gives Who He Is.

Jesus said this to His disciples, right before the hardest night of His life:

"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives."
- John 14:27

The world's peace is a result. It comes after the circumstances line up. Jesus' peace is a gift from His nature. It doesn't wait for the circumstances to line up first.

Paul describes it this way:

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace..."
Galatians 5:22-23

Fruit isn't manufactured. You don't force it, strive for it, or earn it through effort.
It grows, slowly, out of something already rooted.
Peace and joy work the same way when they're coming from the Spirit rather than your circumstances.

She Is, Before She Does

"She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come."
Proverbs 31:25

Notice the tense. She is clothed... Not she will be, once she's married. Not she becomes strong once she's chosen. She already carries it, in the middle of whatever season she's actually in 💗

What To Actually Do

1. Name your current Do-Have-Be sentence.
Finish this honestly: "Once I have ___, then I'll finally feel ___." Say it out loud. You can't challenge a lie you haven't named.

2. Borrow His peace instead of building your own.
Next time anxiety rises, don't try to self-generate calm through control. Pray John 14:27 as a declaration, not a wish. Peace isn't something you're manufacturing. It's something you're receiving.

3. Practice being before doing, today.
Pick one small moment and show up from identity, not proof. Pray without trying to earn it. Rest without justifying it. Ask yourself what it would feel like to stop chasing the next promotion of the soul.

4. Let fruit grow instead of forcing it.
Striving is flesh. Abiding is Spirit. Abiding looks like an ordinary Tuesday spent close to Him, not an achievement you can point to.

This is the whole shift Chapter 6 of From Believing to Becoming walks through. Not performing wifeliness. Not doing your way into worthiness. Becoming from identity, the way Jesus already models it. If this is the piece you've been missing in your waiting season, that's where I'd start. You can grab it here.

🙏 Let’s finish with a closing prayer 🙏

Heavenly Father, thank You that You don't just have peace to hand out when I've earned it. Thank You that You are peace, and joy, and You've already given me access to both.
Forgive me for the seasons I've tried to do my way into feeling worthy, instead of resting in who You've already made me. Show me where I'm still running the old formula. Give me the courage to stop doing, and start becoming, from everything You already are in me.

In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.

With love and faith,
Zena
